Texas requires teen driver education before a teen can obtain a provisional license. Teens may begin classroom instruction at 14, but cannot apply for a learner license until age 15.
After completing the required classroom portion and meeting DPS requirements, apply for a Texas learner license.
Before getting a provisional license, teens must complete the required in-car instruction and supervised practice.
Texas DPS lists 7 hours of observation, 7 hours of driving instruction, and 30 hours of supervised practice, including 10 at night.
Teens must hold the learner license for at least six months and be at least 16 before qualifying for a provisional license.
Complete ITTD after the behind-the-wheel requirements and within 90 days before the road test.
Pass the driving skills test and complete the remaining DPS requirements for the provisional license.
A 6-hour Adult Driver Education course is required for first-time Texas driver license applicants ages 18–24, with limited exceptions such as certain new residents surrendering a valid out-of-state license.
If you need driving practice before the road test, obtain the appropriate restricted license or permit required to practice legally.
Take behind-the-wheel lessons or practice before your road test.
Complete ITAD before the driving skills test. The certificate is valid for 90 days.
Bring the required DPS documents and valid Impact Texas certificate.
Texas does not require a driver education course for first-time applicants age 25 or older.
Prepare the required identity, residency, Social Security, vehicle registration/insurance information, and other applicable documentation.
Behind-the-wheel lessons are available if you need practice before testing.
ITAD is required before the driving skills test and is valid for 90 days.
